The Solemn Warning of Jesus

This is the core of the sermon's most solemn warning. Jesus is not speaking to atheists or idol worshippers here. He is addressing the religious, the active, and the seemingly devout. These are people who prophesied in His name, cast out demons, performed miracles, and did many good works (Matthew 7:22). They fed the poor, handed out tracts, and led Bible studies. They were, by all outward appearances, model Christians.

The Fatal Flaw

So what was the fatal flaw? Performance without relationship. Invocation without obedience. Jesus asks piercingly, "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46). They honored Him with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him (Isaiah 29:13). They enjoyed the label of "Christian" but rejected the lordship of Christ. They pursued the gifts and works of God but neglected the will and the heart of God.

The Consequences of Neglect

They were like salt that lost its saltiness—outwardly recognizable but inwardly impotent, good only to be thrown out (Matthew 5:13). They built their lives on the sand of religious performance, and the storm of judgment swept it all away (Matthew 7:26-27).

The Danger of Cultural Christianity

This is the danger of modern, cultural Christianity. It is possible to be busy in the church yet unknown to the Christ of the church. The antidote is not more activity, but total, daily surrender. "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23).

Self-Reflection

Pause and search your heart today. Are you cultivating a performance for people to see, or a personal, obedient relationship with Jesus for Him to know? Cry out to Him now for a heart of true surrender, that you may never hear those dreadful words.

The Path to True Relationship

To build a genuine relationship with Jesus, we must prioritize our time with Him. This means daily prayer, reading the Bible, and seeking His presence. It requires us to be honest about our struggles and to seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.

The Importance of Community

Engaging with a community of believers can also strengthen our relationship with Christ. Fellowship with others who share our faith encourages accountability and growth. It helps us to stay focused on our spiritual journey and reminds us of the importance of living out our faith authentically.

Embracing Holiness

Holiness is not just a set of rules; it is a way of life. It involves making choices that align with God's will. This means rejecting sin and embracing righteousness. It requires a commitment to living out our faith in every area of our lives.

Preparing for the Return of Christ

As we live in anticipation of Christ's return, we must remain vigilant. This means staying grounded in our faith and being prepared for His coming. We should share the message of repentance and holiness with others, helping them to understand the importance of being ready for His return.

The Call to Action

In conclusion, I urge you to reflect on your relationship with Christ. Are you merely going through the motions? Or are you genuinely seeking Him? Take time to pray and ask for His guidance. Engage with your community and grow in your faith.
